Baselines

Yesterday was gorgeous. The quintessential spring day -- sunny, 70, breezy... basically perfect! I didn't get a chance to saddle up until almost 6:45, and I wasn't in the mood to actually school. So I tossed a western saddle and hackamore on Ruby and decided to hack until we started to lose daylight.
She was about as enthusiastic about riding as I was haha.
One good thing about yesterday is that the Bluetooth speaker I ordered came on the mail! I had this same style speaker a few years ago and it's great for using around the barn/riding -- good sound and battery, rechargeable, and the clip means you can hang it from a d-ring. Another plus, they're inexpensive. My dogs chewed up the clip on my original, and then eventually DH dropped it enough that it stopped holding a charge. So I went to replace it, and imagine my excitement to find that it came in TEAL.
Yes please.
I clipped that to the saddle when I tacked up -- Ruby seemed less than appreciative of the Taylor Swift I had playing (shut up I know I'm the most basic of white girls) so I switched to my usual riding music (a Lindsey Stirling based instrumenal Pandora station). She was super chill and relaxed when we headed out to the field, which was an improvement. She got a little antsy once we were in the woods, and started to slip frequently in the mud when she'd try to jig. I finally picked a turning point and walked her back -- I'm still trying to make it fun for her to ride our trails, so picking a fight to make a point wasn't on my agenda.
We still had daylight so I kept her walking past the barn and we headed down the road. We walked to the nearest neighbors driveway, stopped and hung out in the road for a minute, then hacked back. I had set up a profile for Ruby in the Equilab app and tracked the ride, so I decided to finish up in the arena with some trot and canter, just to get a baseline set for her.
It did track elevation this time... But I can't find any explanation online for what this metric means? Hazards of a free app I guess 😂
Although I didn't start the ride with the best mindset (thanks broken car and impending $$ mechanic bill), a relaxing hack out with the best bay mare was the perfect way to put a smile back on my face!
Another thing that put a smile on my face was being included in a Horse Nation collage of matchy-matchy outfits with Cinna
What put a smile on your face this week? Tell me something good! :)

  1. How come your displays in Equilab look so much different from mine. I don't have percentages for the turns and my energy consumption data is MJ Energy and Energy. I keep playing with the settings but nothing changes. Hmmph.

    1. Hmmm. Do you have Android or iPhone? Do you have a profile for Henry set up? I added info for both Ruby and Cinna (although I mostly ignored the question about weight because I didn't feel like dicking with the conversion). I can access those graphs under the "details" button. I also ignored it's question about my weight, so I'm just basically tossing out the energy consumption section haha.

    2. I have iPhone. Yeah I set up a profile for him and added info... it just looks different.

    3. That's probably it then -- I have Android. I know on the Equisense app the details look different on android/iphone, although presumably the same information is tracked, so the Equilab app functioning similarly makes sense. Now I'm curious about what yours looks like, hope you write about it and include screenshots! 😁

You can also search wireless Bluetooth speaker and find more -- I'd already had this brand/style in black, so I knew I liked it. But there are many other brands/colors/styles out there!

    1. Yay for good weather for you! I don't think we'll have much sun for a few days, but it's also the Midwest so forecasts are notoriously commonly wrong! Time will tell 🙂

  5. In the Equisense app Elevation tracks the poll elevation (from the girth I'm not sure how so yeah) but it looks like yours is in meters? So I dunno

    1. I got wildly curious and messaged the company, and apparently it's supposed to measure terrain elevation? But also apparently there are some issues with it's accuracy (since it uses the phone sensor and different phone sensors track differently? Idk) so they're working on an app update. The app creators we're SUPER responsive and nice though, so that was fun!

I would also be curious how the Equisense tracks poll elevation from the girth, haha. Voodoo magic? 😉

  9. I am so jealous of your weather!! It was 3 degrees this morning hahaha and there is 49575637 feet of snow. Glad you had a good ride though and it sounds like you are having luck with her attitude outside the ring!

    1. It was just a brief glimpse of spring -- now it's back to dreary and rainy and cool. Though thankfully not 3 degrees! I don't know how you deal ☺️

  10. I just started with equilab and I like it so far. I'm curious to see what the riders with equisense find by comparing the two apps (especially because equisense is prohibitively expensive for me!)

    1. Yeah same here (regarding the expense of the equisense). I know L is going to run some comparisons, and Teresa is too. Megan's gave me some hope that it's not a total waste of time! 😀 So I'm definitely looking forward to bloggers sharing data over the coming months.

    1. It's fab! I really love playing instrumental music while I ride and I got tired of my phone speaker being muffled in a pocket or holder -- and the clip on this one makes it so versatile!

  12. I need to know more about this app and that speaker! Love that it's a clip on and not that expensive - i'm very good at breaking things. Also, your love of teal makes me so happy and looks FABULOUS on your girls!

    1. If click back to the previous post, there's more info about the app 😀 it's called Equilab. I'm definitely going to post more about it in the future (once I have more rides tracked), and I think quite a few bloggers have downloaded it, so hopefully more summaries will be up soon. And in the comments above there's a link to the speaker, if you're in the market!

      And thank you 😍
